Brandable vs. Descriptive Domains: Which Converts Better?

Brandable vs. Descriptive Domains: Which Converts Better?

The Shift to Brandable

In 2010, exact-match domains (EMDs) like "CheapCarInsurance.com" printed money on Google. Today, Google's algorithm penalizes low-quality EMDs. The advantage has shifted entirely to brandable names.

Why Brandables Win

  • Ownability: You can trademark a brandable name. You cannot trademark a generic term.
  • Pivot-Friendly: Amazon started as a bookstore. If they were named "OnlineBookStore.com", they could never have sold cloud services (AWS). Brandable names allow you to pivot.
  • Emotional Connection: "Apple" evokes simplicity and design. "ComputerHardwareInc" evokes a spreadsheet.

When to use Descriptive?

Descriptive domains still work well for local service businesses (e.g., "AustinPlumbing.com") where the user intent is purely transactional and geographic. But for scalability, brandable is king.
